BWC reminds employers to think safety during National Safety Month
COLUMBUS - Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Administrator/CEO Steve Buehrer kicked off the month of June with a
reminder to employers and employees to think safety. June is National safety Month across the United States and a perfect
time for employers to review and update their safety programs.
"I encourage employers to utilize this month to talk with employees and hear suggestions for making their workplaces
safer," said Administrator Buehrer. "They should even consider marking the month of June each year to review their
safety programs and requirements to ensure everyone understands safety procedures and has received the latest training."
Here are a few suggested areas to review yearly and links to additional BWC resources:
- Occupational Safety and Health Administrator (OSHA) record keeping requirements - Employers with more than 10
employees during a year must complete an annual OSHA records report. Information about what is required is located on
OSHA's website.
- Emergency preparedness programs - There are many types of emergencies employers face, from natural disasters to terrorist
attacks. Employers can review scenarios with their employees so they are prepared to make the best decisions in the event
of an emergency.
- Hazard communications plans - These plans keep record of all hazardous chemicals, how to use them, what to do if an
employee is exposed, and where to find that data within the workplace easily. Employees need this training when hired
and refreshed throughout their employment. BWC consultants can help employers create a hazard communications plan.
- First aid kits - Check the first aid kit to ensure all supplies are replenished and any medications are not expired.
BWC's video library contains several training videos on first aid in the workplace.
