BWC Appoints New Chief Internal Auditor, Chief Information Officer
Murdock and Croyle Assuming New Positions within BWC
COLUMBUS – Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Administrator Marsha Ryan has selected Caren
Murdock as chief of internal audit and Thomas Croyle as chief of infrastructure and technology.
Murdock was hired in January as BWC’s internal audit director. In this position, she supervised all BWC audit
activities. In her new position, Murdock will manage the Internal Audit Division. The Internal Audit Division
operates independently of management and regularly tests internal controls and assesses compliance to ensure
business processes open, clear and well documented. The division also provides an independent assessment
of the performance of programs, activities and functions. Internal controls are one of five priorities set
by BWC to restore operational excellence and serve customers more effectively and efficiently. Audit
recommendations are presented publicly to the BWC Board of Directors’ Audit Committee, increasing
transparency and accountability.
Murdock has served in fiscal, audit and accounting positions with many Ohio agencies, including:
- The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services;
- The Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services;
- The Ohio Department of Development;
- The State Attorney General and Auditor.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting and business administration from The Ohio State University.
“Caren successfully stepped into the role of the former chief and has already seamlessly transitioned into
this position,” said BWC Administrator Marsha Ryan. “She is a detail-oriented professional whose finance and
auditing skills, and high level of motivation will make her an excellent leader of our Internal Audit Division.”
Croyle will lead BWC’s Infrastructure and Technology (IT) Division’s strategy and initiatives to enable,
support and achieve operational, financial and customer service goals. Croyle served as director of BWC’s
Enterprise Data Management for BWC since 1996. He also directed the creation of the Data Warehouse, which
comprises all BWC data subject areas. In June, Tom assumed responsibility for BWC’s Enterprise Data Mapping
initiative to document and archive BWC’s core operational processes essential to injured workers and employers.
The goal of process mapping is to break down work silos within the agency to eliminate inefficiencies, reduce
administrative costs and improve customer service.
“We received a high level of interest in this position, but Tom’s 12 years at the bureau and his significant
contributions our IT division make him the right choice for this position,” added Ryan. “His knowledge, experience
and demonstrated ability will be an asset as we work toward our future technology-related goals, particularly in
our mapping initiative that will help us become more efficient and ultimately improve customer service.”
Croyle previously served in technology positions at Huntington Service Co., Comtech Systems and Nationwide
Mutual Insurance Companies. Croyle holds a Bachelor of Arts in computer science from The Ohio State University.
