BWC Board of Directors Hears Public Input on Medical Services
COLUMBUS – The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Board of Directors today held its second public forum
on medical services. Today’s forum enabled employers, injured workers and interested parties to discuss their
perspectives and experiences on issues related to the coverage, level of benefits and treatment for medical
care, vocational rehabilitation and pharmaceutical services. The Board also heard testimony related to
best practices for assuring efficient and effective delivery of the managed care process.
“Quality, timely, cost-effective medical treatment, outstanding services and ease in navigating the workers’
compensation system are extremely important in the successful treatment and recovery of Ohio’s injured workers,”
said BWC Chief of Medical Services Bob Coury. “The candid statements by those who testified today will be invaluable
in addressing BWC’s medical service programs. In reforming BWC operations and programs, it is our goal to
ensure our medical services provide employers and injured workers with the best possible access to quality,
cost-effective and timely delivery of care when they need it most.”
Approximately 25 people addressed the Board. Remarks focused on a range of issues including injured workers’
personal medical experiences; provider concerns regarding system complexity; and suggestions for various program
improvements. Several injured workers expressed their frustration with BWC processes and limitations related to
medical specialists and treatments. In addition, speakers representing the medical community discussed the
benefit of various therapies in the recovery of injured workers, and the positive impact timely and accurate
treatment has on the financial well-being of Ohio employers.
Most speakers noted their appreciation to the BWC Board of Directors and the agency’s new leadership in
recognizing the need for reform to better serve Ohio’s injured workers and the employer community. In his
closing remarks, Board Chairman Bill Lhota said, “In my opinion it is extremely important that this board
hears from you. We will continue these forums in the future. They provide us with valuable input from those
who utilize Ohio’s workers’ compensation system.”
