Ryan Joins Ohio Labor Groups in Honoring Workers Killed on Duty

COLUMBUS – Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Administrator Marsha Ryan today joined the Central Ohio Labor Council (COLC) in a ceremony recognizing the contributions of Ohio workers killed on the job. The ceremony, sponsored by COLC, was held Saturday at Workers Memorial Park in downtown Columbus to pay tribute to central Ohio workers who died as a result of a workplace accident.

Speaking to the assembled crowd of family members, labor representatives and co-workers, Ryan said, “It is humbling to recognize those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of service to their employer, or in some cases their community. As the friends, colleagues and family members of those we honor today know that their passion for service and dedication to duty is recognized by the people of Ohio.”

Since 1912, Ohio's workers' compensation system has helped employers and employees cope with workplace injuries by providing safety education and medical and compensation benefits for work-related injuries, diseases and deaths. The current mission of BWC is to protect injured workers and employers from loss as a result of workplace accidents, and to enhance the health and well-being of all Ohioans and the Ohio economy.

Last year, BWC assisted nearly 155,000 Ohio workers who reported on-the-job injuries. The agency also assisted the families of 176 workers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
