Robert Coury came to BWC with broad experience in family services and in administrative and
fiscal operations. He has a strong record as a lawyer and prosecutor of complex, high-profile
economic crimes and public corruption cases.
At BWC, Coury oversees the Medical Services Division and the bureau’s special investigations
unit.
Before coming to BWC in June 2007, Coury was First Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecuting
Attorney for more than eight years. While there, he supervised 300 attorneys and staff, and
served as legal counsel to the county commissioners and the leadership of other county
agencies. He was also responsible for leading the county-wide criminal justice reform effort on behalf of the prosecutor’s office. This included integrating many disparate criminal justice information systems.
Prior to going to work for Cuyahoga County in 1999, Coury was chief assistant law director
for the city of Parma for five years. He served as lead counsel in major litigation and
managed an office of 22 attorneys and staff. Coury was also a partner in a litigation firm
in northeast Ohio — Weiner, Suit & Coury. Before that, he was an assistant prosecuting
attorney for Cuyahoga County.
Coury earned his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1986 and
his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Toledo in 1983. After earning his
law degree, Coury was an accountant for Management Fiscal Services, a health-care management
firm specializing in medical reimbursement law. The firm is located in Berea.
Coury now lives in Columbus, Ohio.
