Summit showcases ways to invest resources in safety programs
Ohio’s public employers started 2003 with a new resolve and a little
help from BWC’s Public Employer Summit. More than 600 attendees from a
variety of organizations took advantage of the free January seminar held
at four locations throughout the state.
In 2002, public employers earned a 25-percent bonus rebate for attending the summit.
In 2003, BWC experts illustrated how to invest resources into workers’ compensation
and safety programs. As an added bonus, attendees also could receive credit for Step 6
of BWC’s 10-Step Business Plan.
This year’s summit tackled issues ranging from safety challenges and injury management
to transitional work programs and tax-dollar savings through effective risk management.
Public employers may not have had the financial incentive to attend the 2003 summit,
but they received another valuable commodity: knowledge.
Here is what a few of the attendees said about the 2003 summit.
"I attended the summit to get different ideas on how to improve our safety program.
Although we’ve had a safety program for years, I like listening to what other communities
are doing. I’m always open to ideas because there is always room for improvement."
— Susan Backs, personnel director, city of St. Marys
"It was very helpful to hear the statistics presented and the practical observations
from BWC people and the other speakers. The outline about employee involvement and hazard
abatement will be very useful for me to take back to our safety committee and ask,
‘Have we done this?’"
— Kevin Celarek, administrator, Green Township
