OhioBWC - Basics: BWC's medical repository
BWC’s medical repository
Providing medical reports to the managed care organization (MCO) within 24 hours has a number of advantages, including
assisting BWC with the claims process. In most cases, the sooner the MCO sends the initial medical documentation to the
claims service specialist, the sooner BWC can allow the claim.
Since many of these medical reports and other documents are transmitted early in the claims process, often before BWC assigns a
claim number, some documents go to the wrong MCO or directly to BWC. In some cases, documents are lost. BWC’s medical repository
reduces the number of duplicate requests from BWC and MCOs to providers for medical documentation, and coordinates faxes coming
from providers so that MCO and BWC documents are in sync.
The medical repository process is transparent to providers. Through an automated call-forwarding process, copies of the
faxed documents are stored electronically in a medical repository, so BWC and MCO staff can view them. MCOs can only see
documents associated with their claims.
