First Things First!

The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) understands what a difficult time it can be after sustaining a workplace injury. That's why we want to make sure the workers' compensation process is as simple and smooth for you as possible. BWC's focus is to provide you with a safe return to work.

The sooner we hear about the claim, the sooner the injured worker can receive benefits when the claim is allowed. Time is the key factor in being able to deliver prompt and courteous service to Ohio’s workforce. Immediately after a workplace injury, there are four things you should do.
  1. Seek medical attention.
  2. Tell your employer you have been injured. Ask your employer if you need to fill out an internal accident report.
  3. Tell your doctor or emergency room the name of your managed care organization (MCO) at the time of service. They will need this information to file your claim.*
  4. Ask your doctor or emergency room to file your claim with the MCO. Your doctor is required to file the claim with your MCO within 24 hours.

When you go to the doctor make sure you take with you the identification card your employer should have given you with the name of your managed care organization (MCO). Knowing your MCO is key to filing your claim and receiving prompt health care. BWC is here to help you. We will help you get the quality health care you need to recover from your injury and return to work.

*If you do not know who your MCO is, ask your employer or call 1-800-OHIOBWC, and press 0. Your MCO provided your employer with MCO identification cards. If you do not have an identification card, contact your employer.
