Since 1912, Ohio's workers' compensation system has helped
employers and employees cope with workplace injuries by providing medical and
compensation benefits for work-related injuries, diseases and deaths. BWC has
a central office in Columbus and 16 customer service offices located across
the state. In addition, we've established a customer focus center in
Bridgeport.
BWC provides insurance to about two-thirds of Ohio's work force. The
remaining workers receive coverage directly through their employers.
These companies are part of a self-insurance program for large and
financially stable employers who meet strict qualifications set by BWC.
With more than $19 billion in assets, BWC is the largest exclusive
state-fund workers’ compensation system in the United States and the
second largest underwriter of workers’ compensation insurance in the country.
In fiscal year 2006, BWC provided workers’ compensation coverage to more
than 288,000 employers, processed more than 188,000 new claims and paid out
more than $1.9 billion in benefits. Premiums and assessments from employers was
more than $2.1 billion.
Ohio’s workers’ compensation system is made up of two parts: BWC, which
is the administrative and insurance arm of the system, and the
Industrial
Commission of Ohio (IC), which is the claims adjudicative arm. The IC
hears and decides contested workers’ compensation claims and issues.
The governor appoints the three-member commission and the
Ohio Senate confirms those appointments. One member represents labor,
one represents employers and one represents the public.
The Ohio Workers’ Compensation Oversight Commission is responsible for
reviewing BWC’s investments and investment policy, the administrator also
seeks advise and consent from the commission in regard to administrative
rules. The five-member commission is comprised of two representatives of
Ohio’s work force, two representatives of employers, and another member who
represents the public.
Today, BWC is a leader in the workers’ compensation industry with innovative
programs created with our customers -- workers, employers and medical
providers -- in mind. The latest of these efforts is ohiobwc.com,
which has helped us remove bureaucratic barriers through technology.
