Coal Mine Operators

Coal Mine Operators and certain other employers engaged in coal mine construction, maintenance, and coal transportation may be required to carry Black Lung Coverage in order to comply with the standards of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act.

This coverage is in addition to the employer's regular Ohio workers compensation insurance. Black Lung coverage is available through BWC, private insurance carriers or the employer may self-insure with the U. S. Department of Labor.

If an employer chooses to obtain Black Lung Coverage through BWC, a premium security deposit based on the total eight months estimated payroll is required. There is no maximum premium security deposit for Black Lung as there is for regular state fund coverage ($1000). Applications for BWC Black Lung Coverage are available by contacting BWC's Legal Operations department at 614-466-6600.
